Honoring African American Patriots of Philadelphia

The Captain William Magill Chapter was honored to partner with the Society of the War of 1812 in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in presenting two plaques to The African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas recognizing the War of 1812-era service of two African American patriots in Philadelphia.

Rev. Absalom Jones was honored for his work mobilizing hundreds of men of color for the defense of Philadelphia during the War of 1812. Many feared that after attacks on Baltimore, the British would target Philadelphia. Rev. Jones and the men he rallied showed incredible dedication in erecting defensive structures.

James Forten was honored for his efforts to fortify Gray’s Ferry in Philadelphia. It was reported that he worked for two days without intermission. As a patriot in the American Revolution, his continued service in America’s Second War of Independence was especially noteworthy.

It was an honor to recognize these men and their contributions, and we thank The African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas for graciously allowing us to present them to be displayed in this historic Philadelphia community founded by Rev. Jones.
